Project 52: Brothers | Frères

4.29.2013

It is beautiful to see that after five years of being an only child and two years longing for his new housemate to become... useful, my older son is settling into his role as grand frère. I can tell by his furrowed brow and heavy sighs that the transition is still at times ill-fitting and uncomfortable, but I know (from his honest ramblings) he wouldn't trade back to being alone for the world. In his little brother he has found a certain security, affection and the early spring of leadership. He has found a part of himself.

  1. Oh, such precious times for the two boys. They will always remember these bonds of brothers.
I especially like the photo with them holding hands. Sigh, I kind of miss those young days...
I wish you a wonderful week, Catherine!

    1. These moments go by so fast don't they Shirley... as I was shooting, I was wondering how many more times they would hold hands so lovingly (the little one is so independent, he likes to do everything on his own without much help). I'm sure it must be such joy to see your children grow up to be wonderful young adults, but already I'm missing these young days. I hope you have a great week too Shirley :)

  2. Oh my gosh, how sweet. I love the one where your boys are holding hands too. Being a mother of two boys, I know what you mean about the older brother growing into his role with sighs, yet also finding that security in his younger brother. I love what you have written, Catherine--and the quote is perfect :)

    1. Aw Charmaine thank you,... I figured you've experienced the same beauty with your boys. I love how your photographs often show the two of them together, bonded completely. There's a lot said about the bond of sisters, but wouldn't you agree that brother bonds are equally as magical :)

  3. This post is especially poignant to me Catherine as a mother to two grown up boys who are very close. Brother bonds are very strong and I'm so happy to see this is true for your little men as illustrated by your images. xo

    1. Congratulations Nancy! It must be enormously rewarding to see the bonds remain strong (and grow ever stronger) throughout the years... your boys are very fortunate :) I hope the same for my boys! xo

  4. Your photos speak to my heart, as a mother to four brothers. Our older two are twins, obviously a very special bond.. their next brother was born one week shy of their 5th birthday.. it's an interesting age gap to observe in a relationship.

    1. That's quite a brotherhood Amanda! I think moms of boys share a kind of sisterhood and it's wonderful that we can all connect this way... I thought the 5 year age gap between my boys might be an issue (initially it was! my older son expected his baby brother to come out playing and talking right away)... but now it's much smoother and I wouldn't have it any other way :)

    1. Why thank you so much Lisa! It's true, as many photos as I take of my boys, I always feel like I'm missing (other routine but equally special) moments of them. The other day, my husband mentioned how difficult it must be to be a mom because along with all of our long list of responsibilities, we also carry an enormous maternal sense of nostalgia and the longing for our children to never grow up and leave us...

  10. So sweet! The first photo looks like big brother is whispering a secret to little brother! Je me demande si c'est en anglais ou en français ;)
