The Soul of Paris

Lately I’ve been observing Parisian folk against the backdrop of their city and notice how commanding a role a single character can play within a photographic frame, revealing the city's rhythm, its energy, its soul. I've always believed you can capture the heart of a place in the quiet and often overlooked details,... I'm now exploring how the beat of that heart springs from the people among all those big and small details.

  4. It's a talent to see all that and to be able to capture it in photograph. Well done. I love all the pictures.

  7. You're right, Catherine. A single person adds that human connection -- a soul -- to Paris. The black and white is perfect for these images. My favorite is the last one, with the benches, the fountains in the background, the winter trees, and the one intriguing soul sitting in repose. Oh, these make me want to visit Paris again right now!

  8. I think you are right Catherine about finding the soul of the city in it's people. You have brought us some wonderful studies of quietness and I think B&W is perfect for street photography. I wish I had more interesting scenes in my city to photograph. But alas no. I would love to play around with street photography but feel so intrusive with my camera.
Happy image taking and have a great week. And thank you for stopping by my blog and for your comments.

  11. Gorgeous! Usually I love the shades and colors of your pictures, but this series is perfect in black and white.

  12. These are wonderful....I've been back a couple of times to look at them. I'm always so terrible shy about taking photos of strangers....but when I manage the courage {and the photos are in focus and not blurred from me rushing!} I do love the "soul" that the people give the place. Most of the time I've captured people around my pond where I walk...and it's interesting, but you see the dreamers, the loners, those with somewhere to be....and those on their phones...not unlike what you've captured here. My favorites are when I happen to capture a family, or a parent and child. Anyhow - lovely as always!

    1. Thank you dear Adrienne... I'm incredibly shy when taking street shots of people too (as evidenced by these shots). I used to always wait for people to step out of the frame, made things so much easier (and prettier, I mistakenly thought), but that all depends now...

  14. Oh yes, I like this look behind the scenes of people moving about their day, not even knowing we're looking in.

  15. The individual characters giving Paris that personality it is so famous for.

  16. Street photography is a wonderful way to show the heart of a city and black and white photos work so well, Catherine. It will be interesting to see how you continue this series and perhaps add more people to the images.

  17. Beautiful pictures. I love how you captured that sensation of being alone in the middle of what is a buzzing busy city.

  20. Excellent, excellent, excellent! Amazing how posture and/or movement influences the way you look at a picture - especially if Paris is the background.

  22. Astute - each photo draws me in and makes me wonder. Your singular anonymous photos allow us to share unknown lives and build our own stories. (A thing I love to do.)

  23. I almost missed this post and I absolutely am so drawn to it! Seeing the everyday life and people of Paris is mesmerizing. And processing these photos in black and white is brilliant, it gives such a journalistic quality to the whole post. Kudos, Catherine!
