The Landscape: Sunflowers | Tournesols

3.04.2013

Just several yards from my father-in-law's home in Gers (southwestern France) are these magnificent sunflower (tournesol) fields that in all their splendor surprisingly become unnoticed by the locals, just simple backdrops they drive past without a second look. I suppose when you grow up around them, one day they just meld into the landscape, like evergreens or wildflowers... or do they? My father-in-law will eventually go on and on about his lovely sunflowers when he's far away from them long enough. Like many of us who leave our hometown, the first thing we miss is often the thing we learned to overlook...

  1. Sigh, thank you for this beautiful sight on a Monday! I couldn't agree more, we miss the things we never suspect. And to take such beauty for granted...what a sweet luxury!

    1. The sunflowers are harvested primarily for their oil (I took these shots in late July, just before harvest). Thank you for your visit Valentina, have a good evening as well :)

  3. These are so gorgeous, Catherine! Oh, to drive past this backdrop every day. I know what you mean about a scene just melding into the landscape. The Pacific Northwest has an abundance of evergreens. When we leave town and come back is when we most appreciate them, no?
