Mamy's Garden | Le Jardin de Mamy

9.09.2012

One day perhaps I'll have a garden of my own, a backyard bouquet of sorts... though if you ask my husband, he's quick to point out I lack a green thumb! But that hasn't stopped me from dreamily browsing through Jardin magazines and earnestly trying to keep the few potted plants I have alive.

So for a week every summer in France, I co-opt my mother-in-law's intimate little green space. Her petit jardin is simply a small rock terrace that flows into a square of sloping grassland dotted with flowers, potted plants and patches of hidden herbs. A grand but fading pine tree offers an eclipsing shade for the heat weary and a respite for tired, hungry birds - the local mésanges and moineaux (tit birds and sparrows) - that come singing every morning and eveningEmpty and forgotten pots bely the gardener's natural green thumb and affection for her backyard sanctuary, where she is dutiful and responsive.

How about you, do you have un petit jardin?

  1. Wow, I love the backlighting of the spider web! Beauty. I bet you were in Heaven at the newsstand with those Jardin issues, Catherine:) btw, I don't have much of a green thumb either. I'm hoping to change that one day;)

    1. It took me a few tries with my iPhone to get the spiderweb shot Charmaine! And yes, it IS pure joy flipping through Jardin magazines :) But alas, my poor black thumb! I've even managed to kill one of the heartiest of plants - the trusty cactus. Well my friend, I'm happy to know I'm not alone... but something tells me you're being modest (i.e. thriving lavender in your backyard ;)

  2. Beautiful and inspiring pictures... I used to have a backyard when I lived abroad. Although I totally enjoyed it, I am no green thumb and gardens do require a LOT of time and patience. Still, I enjoy reading about nature, learning about it (just bought Le Dessing Botanique, see? ;)) and spending time surrounded by it (went to Giverny last week-end!). Maybe some day I'll manage to have a green patch of paradise again, who knows? It is great that you get to enjoy Mamy's garden in the meantime :)

    1. Why thank you Daydreamer! Gardens offer the simplest of pleasures, how wonderful you had one of your own and now learning more about plants in complete detail. Le Dessin Botanique looks so interesting! Please do share the secrets of the botanical world with me some day :) And ahh Giverny, was it as magnificent as it seems? I have to make it there one day...
