Project 52: Time + Motion

5.27.2013

Le temps passe si vite | Time goes by so quickly

As my youngest son races through his infancy, I catch myself in a rabid rush to capture moments with a fervor that wistfully recalls the speed at which my older son has grown, knowing that waiting for later sometimes means missing the chance completely. It's like observing a palpable thing called Time and watching it materialize then quickly disappear. Over and over again...

So the mundane and minutia of everyday become just as important as the milestones and monumental events of every year. Each moment begs the question, "will I experience this again?", which invites a sweeping sadness and in turn compels me to keep shooting.

Experience teaches that memories can dim and morph over time, but pictures remain and seldom lie... they allow us to summon what we felt at a single moment and fill in where Time had disappeared.

  1. oh beautiful. just gorgeous photos. I love the mood and feel.

I feel as life is passing so quickly somedays that I barely have to time to savor it. I think it is important to try to slow down when we can, because it is so impossible to rewind. xo

    1. Oh Rebecca, how often I've wished for the Rewind button, even just to relive tender moments with my boys... so I'm working on slowing down and savoring experiences (why and when did this become such an impossible feat?). Thank you so much for your very kind comments - xo

  2. I love these frozen moments, it seems life really is made of those little moments just as much as (or more so than) the monumental events! How wonderful you can keep these for your son to see in the future, for you *both* to see. Very precious.

    1. Yes, that's my hope and intention Lulu... my boys will probably think I went overboard with the photos though :)

  3. So accurately stated, Catherine. I'm glad I captured much of my kids' younger adventures. It doesn't stop when they get older, either. I love the motion you captured - I can tell he loves those trains!

    1. Thank you Shirley, he does adore his trains (at the moment :). I imagine you have crates (and terabytes!) of beautiful photos of your children... am trying not to think of all the storage I'll be needing in the years to come.

  4. I'm fixated on his hair for some reason -- little boy hair just screams to be tousled. :)

    1. That's so funny Nancy! His hair fascinates me (my older son and I have straight hair!),... so I find myself constantly touching and photographing it :)

  7. Aw. I know exactly how you feel, Catherine. You explain this spot on. Such a gift to savor these days, isn't it? I love his squishy little hands as he holds the train set. Sigh... so sweet.
